【实战演练1

The twentieth century saw greater changes than any century before changes for the better, changes for the worse, changes that brought a lot of benefits to human beings, changes that put man in danger .Many things caused the changes, but, in my opinion, the most important was the progress in science.

Scientific research in physics and biology has vastly broadened our views. It has given us a deeper knowledge of the structure of matter and of the universe, it has brought us a better understanding of the nature of life and of its continuous development. Technology in the application of science has made big advances that have benefited us in nearly every part of life.

The continuation of such activities in the twenty-first century will result in even greater advantages to human beings: in pure science—a wider and deeper knowledge in all fields of learning; in applied science—a more reasonable sharing of material benefits, and better protection of the environment.

Sadly, however, there is another side to the picture. The creativity of science has been employed in doing damage to mankind. The application of science and technology to the development and production of weapons of mass destruction has created a real danger to the continued existence of the human race on this planet. We have seen this happen in the case of nuclear weapons, Although their actual use has so far occurred only in the Second World War, the number of nuclear weapons that were produced and made ready for use was so large that if the weapons had actually been used, the result could have been the ruin of the human race, as well as of many kinds of animals.

William Shakespeare said. “The web of our life is of a mingled yarn(纱线), good and ill together. “The above brief review of the application of only one part of human activities—science seems to prove what Shakespeare said. But does it have to be so? Must the ill always go together with the good? Are we biologically programmed for war?

In the course of working my way through school, I took many jobs I would rather forget. But none of these jobs was as dreadful as my job in an apple plant. The work was hard; the pay was poor; and, most of all, the working conditions were terrible.

First of all, the job made huge demands on my strength. For ten hours a night, I took boxes that rolled down a metal track and piled them onto a truck. Each box contained twelve heavy bottles of apple juice. I once figured out that I was lifting an average of twelve tons of apple juice every night.

I would not have minded the difficulty of the work so much if the pay had not been so poor. I was paid the lowest wage of that time—two dollars an hour. Because of the low pay, I felt eager to get as much as possible. I usually worked twelve hours a night but did not take home much more than $ 100 a week.

But even more than the low pay, what made me unhappy was the working conditions. During work I was limited to two ten-minute breaks and an unpaid half hour for lunch. Most of my time was spent outside loading trucks with those heavy boxes in near-zero-degree temperatures. The steel floors of the trucks were like ice, which made my feet feel like stone. And after the production line shut down at night and most people left, I had to spend two hours alone cleaning the floor.

I stayed on the job for five months, all the while hating the difficulty of the work, the poor money, and the conditions under which I worked. By the time I left, I was determined never to go back there again.

The church seems cold this morning, even after all the people, friends and family, fill the benches. I sit here in silence, in shock and denial. This was not supposed to happen. What about our dreams, or our plans? We were going to raise our children, travel the world, and grow old together. I’m only 37, a typical housewife. I don’t know if I can do all this alone – two children, no father. What do I do or say?

The faces of so many people confuse me as they come to pay their last respects. Some have real sorrow; I can see it in their eyes. The others seem to just say, “I told you so.” Those famous last words: I – told – you – so. How I can’t stand them. And the pointing fingers as so – called family and so – called friends pick me out of the crowd for others to see. I want to scream and wake up but I can’t do anything but sit there. How can they be so blind? I fell in love with a man. Love knows no boundaries.

He was a good man, hardworking, caring and kind. He was retired from the Navy and a gentleman. He was sensitive to others’ needs, the kind of man that knew what to do or say, how to humor any situation and calm everyone’s fears. I remember our first child was a big surprise to both of us. I remember when I told him the news. He fell off his chair, saying over and over in disbelief, “But I’m almost sixty.” After a few months he started planning our next and even doing his famous little dance whenever he discussed the idea.

A man, thirty years older than I , lies in a coffin. Flowers, the American flag and his VFW comrades surround him, paying tribute (颂词) to him as the man he really was. And I sit alone here, with our two children, in silence, praying that this cold morning at church is only a nightmare (梦魇) and I will awake to his loving arms again.

Our son, our first born, his joy and pride, sits to the right of me seeming just as confused as me. I look over at him. How he looks like his father – blonder hair, tall and skinny – even his Irish temperament (气质) and that naughty look in his eyes. He’s wearing his father’s watch. It’s too big for him but he refused to take it off. I know he’ll keep it safe. Our second, the little angel and Daddy’s little girl, lays in her stroller (婴儿车) in the aisle, sound asleep. She’ll never remember the man she called “Da”.

The last paragraph, which is italicized, does not lie where it originally was. It’s better for it to go back___________.  Abetween para. 1 and para. 2    Bbetween para. 2 and para. 3

Cbetween para. 3 and para. 4    Dto the very front

Now that we know what stress feels like, let’s talk about where test stress comes from. Here are a few of the biggest causes of test stress:

Pressure from yourself. It’s important to do your best and study hard, but if you feel like you just can’t stop pushing yourself to prepare or that you won’t be happy with anything but a high grade, that pressure can’t be hard to handle.

Pressure from parents and teachers. Most parents want to see great report cards, and they can start pushing when test time comes around. For teachers, many schools want to show high test grades from their students. SO they have high expectations for the teachers, who then have high expectations for the students!

Competition with friends. You love your best friends,  but she’s always asking you how you did on the test you both just took. This is normal, but can add to some of the pressure you’re already feeling.

Past experience. If you had a bad time with a test in the past, or if you’ve done poorly on one or more tests, you could feel anxious about the next one.

Negative thinking. If you’re convinced you’re going to fail, or you keep beating yourself up with thoughts like “I’m not smart enough” or “I never do well”, this can add a lot of stress.

Rumor. Sometimes, other students can spread rumors about a test. Rumors like “That teacher’s tests are totally impossible to pass!” can make you a lot more nervous.

What will the next section mainly talk about ?

A.     how to manage and get rid of stress.

B.     How to prevent pressure from oneself or parents or teachers.

C.     How to compete with friends properly.

D.     How to use rumor to release stress.

Getting on your bike regularly not only helps you travel faster than driving a car, but it improves your health, and also makes you feel better.

    How cycling improves fitness

A study conducted by the Department of Transport finds that even a small amount of cycling can lead to significant gains in fitness. And aerobic fitness is boosted by 11% after just six weeks of cycling short distances four times a week.

Leg strength also improves in the cyclists, which is more important because leg strength improves the mobility by allowing people to get out of chairs more easily, and helps older people especially avoid falls and broken bones and other injuries.

    ____________________________________

There are no real age barriers to cycling, and people of different ages can ride a bike. Anyone with heart disease or other conditions affecting their activity should consult their doctor before starting any exercise program.

    Getting started

What sets cycling apart from most other forms of exercise is how well it fits into our busy, modern lifestyles. Apart from the bicycle itself no other equipment is needed, no special time needs to be set, and no special clothes are needed. Instead of spending time stuck in a car or bus, you spend it on the bike, and there is no need to find extra time to exercise.

You simply start to ride a bike when you would otherwise have gone by car, bus, train or on foot. How much you ride depends on you, your fitness and your lifestyle. New cyclists could start off by using the bike to pop a few hundred yards down the road to the shops or the post box, and gradually increase the distance they cover. In a few weeks aerobic fitness will improve and you will be able to ride for miles.

Which of the following can be proper for the blank of the passage?

A. Tips for cycling           B. Who can cycle

C. Why we should cycle      D. the features of cycling
